The Corsair Commander Pro…A solid device and a far better alternative to the previous Commander Mini which at the time the LINK software was in a far worse state.Which is really what holds a lot of these devices back, like the NZXT HUE, this device, the Mini, etc…I bought this primarily for the fan control, because before this product and the Commander Mini the only other option for software control of PWM fans was with the TBalancer bigNG from Sidewindercomputers which has been ANCIENT for some time, and didnt provide a good user experience requiring a lot of tinkering not to mention the cost of the device. That said the Commander Pro finally brings a truly worthy contender to this albeit niche corner of the hardware market.First off, I did not purchase any LED strips to use with the unit and wont be able to comment on their functionality this is mostly oriented around the fan control aspect of the unit.Install was easy, just needs SATA power, and a free USB 2.0 header on your motherboardThe unit doesnt use much bandwidth and makes available 2 USB 2.0 headers on the unit in case you need more USB 2.0 headers for other devices. With power and data run to it, I plugged in my 6 x PWM 4Pin Fans Gelid Wing 12PLs and fired up my PCYou arent prompted to install software upon loading windows, so you gotta go download that manually from their site which is pretty standard.Once installed everything worked more or less straight away without need for even a system reboot.First thing I did was something I had been wanting to for a long time. I turned my fans OFFIt was a joyous moment being able to do this. Then setting a fan curve to the temperature of my GPU rather than my CPU was the cherry on top.Now this is when I ran into my first problem. I tested each channel individually at max speed to make sure it was all functioning, and some of my fans would spin to full for a second then start spinning around 800 RPM slower than the maximum 1800 RPM of the 12PLs. However this only happened on channels 2,3 and 5. Channels 1, 4, and 6 could spin at full properly. After a small amount of digging I found that in the software a bit out of sight is a way for you to check for firmware updates for the device. This is located in Options Devices where you can click the Check for updates button. This is confusing as the Check for updates button for the software is located under Options About.Odd design decision, but I could say that for a lot of the software. Good thing is it worksUsing that button it let me know there was a firmware update available After letting it update the unit, everything started working as it shouldFans could all go to maximum, and responded better to my control overall. AwesomeThe software is a lot better than it previously has been, as I saw a lot of complaints about the Commander Mini which is why I didnt get one then. While the software could still be improved I doubt it will be getting much love in terms of support and feature updates etc…But it works. Which is more than the previous software did consistently. which is all I askAlso they get personal brownie points for me for not having any BS account signup for saving settings to the cloud and unrelated features like fps counters and overlays etc… like NZXTs CAM software does.So overall, Its a solid choice. 4Stars because it can definitely be improved a lot but its the best option for Software PWM fan control as of right now.
